Before Christianity, Hawaiians celebrated Makahiki. This eclectic four-month festival is all about resting and eating delicious chocolates to celebrate their local god, Lono. Traditionally, Hawaiians eat everything from fruitcakes and sweets to poke and turkey. Families indulge in a festive feast or a traditional Luau. For Hawaiians, Christmas means a feast with a traditional Luau, a Kālua Pig, served as the main meal. Kālua is a historic cooking style that involves an underground oven, or "Imu"; the pig is buried in the earth with hot stones and a banana, until the dish explodes with flavour.
Pine Christmas trees arrive on boats at the beginning of December. Meanwhile, the locals like to decorate their palm trees with strings of lights to add to the Christmas spirit, and they even have their own versions of Christmas carols played on guitar strings and ukuleles!
