We stayed at Loews Portofino Bay last week during a trip to Universal Studios. As someone who travels frequently for work and usually stays at Hilton or Marriott properties, maybe my expectations are too high but for $900 a night, this hotel definitely falls short. Pros: The beds were very comfortable. The Universal Express Passes. For only one day at the parks we consider these a must. Water taxi is convenient to get to the park, only if you time it well. If you don't time it perfectly then you'll save a lot of time by making the 20 minute walk instead to the park. Cons: Our room wasn’t ready on time. Check in is supposed to be 4:00 but they kept telling me ours wasn't ready well past that time. Very frustrating experience after a long day of travel. A round of drinks would go a long way in a situation like that but we didn't even get a "sorry." The room was located at the far end of the East Wing. Very far from the pool, lobby, and water taxi. At check in we were informed that even though we had reserved a room for 5 people, the hotel was out of roll away beds. Not really sure how they expected us to accomodate all 5 without that bed. We ended up finally getting one after returning to the front desk and asking to be moved to a different hotel that could fit us. No luggage carts. We were informed that only employees were allowed to use luggage carts. Very odd. Overall, Portofino Bay didn’t live up to its luxury price tag. For anyone planning a trip to Universal, definitely recommend looking at Loews Royal Pacific instead. It offers similar perks with better service and value. It's also a quicker walk to the park compared to PB.
