I had been dreaming of celebrating my next “big” birthday in The Maldives for years, and my dream came true. We chose Sun Siyam Iru Fushi for being a family resort (we have sons aged 8 and 12) with lots of children’s activities, beautiful accommodation and highly-rated restaurants/dining experiences. We were not disappointed! From the welcome at the main airport in Malé, I knew we’d be in good hands. The hotel’s airport lounge was peaceful, light and spacious (yet had computers and a play area for younger kids), or you could walk around on the balcony while watching the seaplanes take off and land. The flight from Malé to the resort was 45 minutes of photo and video opportunities! The pilots and attendants are the coolest, most chill aircraft staff I’ve ever met. On landing, we got the perfect Maldivian welcome with bodu beru drum and wreaths and we felt like we’d stepped into paradise for a week. Lee was our sweet, smiley, friendly “butler” who talked us through what to expect, booked our á la carte dining reservations, complimentary excursions/experiences and sent the daily itinerary. She’d always give us a wave if she saw us around the island, or stop for a chat if she wasn’t busy with other guests. The buffet is extensive and literally everything I ate was delicious! The Thai restaurant was my favourite, while the kids loved the pasta station and daily ice creams from the dessert parlour :) Christopher and his team have taken the care to ensure that wherever you dine, the food is of high quality and tasty. He, Dorothy and many others could be found greeting guests, asking how we were, our experiences so far and genuinely cared that we were getting the most out of our stay. Anna, Greshan, Ganesh, Abdulla and Hanif are just a few of the amazing staff there who looked after us so kindly. The spa is on another level. You can smell it before you see it, it’s that good! Walking in is like walking into a zen, peaceful world. After my complimentary facial, we returned to use the hydrotherapy suite as a family and booked massages too (the kids have two to choose from!) Our suite was spacious, the outside bathroom was a secluded space complete with jet tub and swing chair. The pristine beach with our own chairs and shade was a few steps out of the sliding doors, and the crystal clear waters were warm enough for even me to swim in them comfortably. Holiday highlights were the views, the sunrise/sunsets, snorkelling with the marine wildlife, spotting reef sharks and jumping/sliding from the jetty into the sea. We were there for a week and I didn’t want to leave! It was a holiday of a lifetime and I’d go back in a heartbeat!
