We were lucky enough to stay at this amazing hotel for 13 nights from 21st December through Christmas and New Year. The short version is that this hotel is absolutely fantastic. Maamutaa is jaw-droppingly beautiful and I lost count of how many times I said “Wow” in a day. Longer version & more details for those of you that want more information… Accommodation: We had an ocean villa (no pool). We had a huge deck with netting, sun loungers & a huge seating area under shade with a sofa, cushions & coffee table. There is a ladder down to the ocean & a shower to wash the salt-water away when you come out of the sea. The bathroom was huge with two sinks, free-standing bath & two showers. I loved the open-air shower. Nothing quite like showering under the stars before dinner! Mini-bar was refilled regularly - it contains gin, vodka, whisky & red wine. In the fridge there is white wine, soft drinks & mixers & milk. There are pods, coffee maker & kettle in the room. Also an iron, ironing board & hairdryer. The way the villas are designed you have complete privacy from neighbouring villas. Getting around: Regular golf carts drive around to take you between the villas & the restaurants/bars etc. There is a timetable but it’s quite relaxed so just wait for the next one or walk. Food & drink: All first-class with great choice & quality. We ate mostly in Melange. Buffet style & you can sit inside or outside. Great variety of food with different sections and a live food station. There are egg stations at breakfast, pasta station & don’t miss the breakfast dosa with your choice of fillings. Great wine & cocktail lists including champagne. We had two evening meals at Souq Oven & you can pay extra to upgrade your meal. My husband paid a bit extra for Wagu beef. There are pizzas available here at lunch time in addition to the usual menu. The 3 bars are all good & different. The Hub (next to the main pool) & Saffron Affair (over the water) are on one side of the island. Sol Rising (next to Souq Oven) is on the other side of the island. There is a pool table in Saffron and my kids lived playing pool in the evening. There is a live house band and DJ - they are really good. Christmas & NY Festivities: There was a full festive programme of events, including some that were chargeable as extras (eg. Dinner on the beach). Included in the all inclusive were the most incredible Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve parties on the beach with the most amazing buffets including oysters & lobsters. Christmas chocolate cake and NY chocolate mousse were brought to our villa. Excursions: we paid extra to do the dolphin cruise & were rewarded with dolphins swimming with the boat and spinner dolphins leaping out of the water. As we were staying for almost two weeks we got a number of vouchers that allowed us to do the sunset cruise twice, snorkelling trip and jet-skis wishing the all-inclusive. I also used some of them for the spa and paid extra to extend the complimentary half-hour to an hour. The ladies in the spa were brilliant. The massages were so relaxing and the spa setting is stunning. Service: The staff here are absolutely brilliant. Nothing is too much trouble for them. I have so many examples of them going the extra mile. One of the chefs got to know my eldest son and made him a special bitter chicken curry for lunch. The chef at the pasta station would make my daughter pasta and bring it to our table. The team would make our daughter a mocktail every dinner. I left my soft sunglasses case somewhere one day and within 10mins of reporting it on the app the head of security came round to talk to me and returned it to me within the hour. Azleef, Aiham and the team at Melange - we miss you! Ammica and the team and the Hub & Saffron - we miss you too! It’s a shame they have to deal with some guests who are rude to them if they don’t get a drink within one minute of asking for it. The wildlife: we love nature and this is a nature lovers paradise. The ocean is rich with life. We saw and snorkelled with sharks, rays, turtles and so many different and colourful fish. The water by the villa is knee to waist deep depending on the tide and the snorkelling around the villa is good but if you walk or swim c 200-300m out towards the drop off (where the water turns deep blue) the closer you get the more magical it is. Once you get a certain way out the coral starts so no walking here else you would damage the coral. We also saw flying foxes, lizards and crabs on the island. This was a special holiday to celebrate my husband’s retirement and it was everything we hoped for and more. Getting there and back takes a long time, but it’s worth it and the Pullman team at Male airport look after you from start to finish, making sure you get your connecting flights. Don’t hesitate to visit. It’s amazing.
