I will start with the good. Despite the score there are plenty of positives for this hotel. The location is good. The hotel is on the beach out of town to the north of Faliraki. There’s a bus stop right outside the hotel which makes travel around the island easy if you want to get out of the hotel. Faliraki is a 10min walk away and the Epsilon shopping centre is 2 minutes in the opposite direction. Access to the beach is straight forward. It’s public beach and there are plenty of sun loungers provided. Alternatively, the hotel has a number of pools all with loungers. There’s no shortage of places to relax. There’s a small outdoor gym which is adequate for most needs. We found that the staff were friendly throughout. Minor complaints - The room was fine, but a little dated. Definitely requires some attention in the bathroom which had a tendency to flood. This was caused by a large gap in the bottom of the shower screen and when releasing the bath water. The flow rate from the bath was greater than the drain could handle and caused water to rise up through the drain unless moderated. The third bed for the child was a sofa bed which was not made up on arrival (late evening) and required housekeeping to attend (which they did quickly). - The food. We had a Vegan in our party and while there are plenty of vegetarian options, there were nights were there was no main dish to accommodate anyone with such dietary requirements, bar a plate of fries, plain pasta or occasionally rice. For the non vegans within our party, choice was excellent and the spread was good. However… Now the downside. If you have seen any other reviews you will know what’s coming. Three people in our party and all of us fell ill. The first two (inc Vegan) in the first 48 hours and the third person on our very last day. We were considering whether we would manage to travel home. The original bout of illness caused a lack of confidence in the food, particularly restricting the vegan who would no longer touch the salads. Now there is debate whether this is a food hygiene issue or a virus. I doubt, but cannot rule out that it’s a virus. However, it is irrelevant and does not absolve the hotel of their responsibility the way they think it does (having read the comments from management). 1. Food hygiene issues speak for themselves. If practices are poor they need fixing. 2. Sickness viruses are not airborne. They are spread by contact. 3. When the first members of our party had become ill, we had not yet ventured beyond the hotel. 4. Not all hotels in the area seem to be affected by this widespread virus (look at reviews). 5. The effects of such a virus can be mitigated by preventing contact spread and proper clean up when there has been illness. The restaurant does have hand sanitiser and plastic gloves hidden away on the left hand side at the entrance. Few people are using it (we didn’t notice it was there for two days with the flow of people coming in and out obscuring it). 6. Finally, the hotel has responded to previous reviews by ultimately saying, not our fault people need to take personal responsibility. Here’s the problem with that. When I go in having used the hand sanitiser, I am not protecting me. I am preventing any bacteria or virus (only if the correct sanitiser is provided), being transferred to another guest. I am protecting other people. For me to be protected, I have to rely on other guests doing the same for me. If the hotel wants to get control of the supposed virus, they need to ensure everyone uses sanitiser and gloves. There’s one entrance/exit and plenty of staff on duty in the restaurant, it is manageable. To summarise, were it not for the widespread problem with illness, I would happily recommend and return. But, there is a hazard to health, so I cannot and will not do that as things are. If the hotel can take responsibility and get this under control it will be a pleasant place to stay.
