A Horrific Experience - Unsafe and Discriminatory, Especially for Black Travelers I feel compelled to share my experience at Mirage World Hotel in Marmaris to warn other people of color. My friend and I, both Black women, had an incredibly distressing and unsafe experience at this hotel, and I strongly advise you to avoid staying here. 1. Racist and Unprofessional Staff: When we first arrived, the hotel staff acted as if they couldn't find our booking, despite it being confirmed. They then took our passports and held them for 10-30 minutes, laughing and chatting in the back office while we repeatedly asked for them back. This behaviour was disrespectful and unprofessional. Eventually, they said they could see our booking, but by then, the damage had already been done. 2. Hostile and Unsafe Environment: As two Black women, we immediately felt unsafe. The hotel staff treated us with open hostility, and we were followed by white male guests who stared at us in a way that felt threatening. At one point, we had to barricade our hotel room door with furniture because we feared for our safety. We went days without eating because the food at the hotel was cold, disgusting, and unappetizing, and we had no other choice but to find nearby restaurants just to get decent food. 3. Harassment and Staring from White Male Guests: The harassment from other guests was unbearable. The white male guests would follow us, sit near us in silence, and just stare at us, making us feel completely uncomfortable and unsafe. I had to get up and leave every time because the atmosphere was so oppressive. It wasn't just the men either—the women at the hotel would laugh and hiss as we walked by, making it clear they didn't want us there. Their hostile glares and demeaning behavior made it feel as though we were unwanted and disgusting. 4. Disturbing Treatment of Darker-Skinned Staff: It was also alarming to notice that most of the darker-skinned staff members worked in the kitchen or as cleaners. One of the cleaners, seeing our distress, tried to console us. She said that people like us shouldn't stay at a hotel like this because she knew what it was like to be treated badly. She shared that she and other staff members are also treated poorly by both guests and the hotel staff because of their skin color. This comment only added to our sense of discomfort and made us realize the extent of the toxic, discriminatory environment. 5. Mental Health Impact and Panic Attacks: My friend, who has previously experienced extreme racist attacks in Kent, had to stay in the room for much of our stay due to panic attacks triggered by the constant harassment. I was left to navigate this hostile environment on my own, which only made things worse. The constant staring from the white male guests, who would sit near me in silence, made me feel increasingly anxious. It felt like there was no escape from the tension. 6. A Slightly Better Experience at a Nearby Hotel: After our distressing experience, my friends moved to the Casablanca Hotel, which was mostly made up of British and Australian tourists. While they still encountered subtle racism, such as curiosity or occasional stares, the treatment was nothing like the extreme hostility and harassment we experienced at Mirage World. The contrast was stark, and it was clear that the Mirage World Hotel was an entirely different and more toxic environment. 7. Lack of Basic Hospitality: On top of everything, the hotel failed to provide basic hospitality. We weren't given a hotel tour, nor were we told where the dining areas were, where to get towels for the pool, or given any guidance about the amenities. We had to figure everything out ourselves, which added to the feeling of being completely neglected. Warning to People of Color: If you are a person of color, I strongly advise you to avoid this hotel! We thought highly of this hotel because of the reviews - don’t be mislead especially if the people reviewing are not from the same background as us! To those who may attempt to defend this hotel and dismiss my experience as playing the "race card," I ask that you please refrain from overlooking or invalidating someone else's lived experience simply because it doesn't align with your own. This message is not for those who are closed-minded, but for those willing to learn and understand that racism is still very much a reality. By defending such behavior, you are inadvertently contributing to the problem rather than being part of the solution.
