Overall I was quite disappointed with this hotel, given that it is rated 4-star. The staff we dealt with were excellent (apart from the housekeepers) but the hotel itself was not so great. The biggest problem was the bathroom, which looked like it had been designed by someone who had seen photos of bathrooms, but had never actually used one. It was ridiculously small and cramped (despite the fact that our room was apparently a ‘Superior Double Room’ – I wonder if the bathroom in a standard room was even smaller – hard to imagine). The shower tray had quite a slope on it and was very slippery, making it difficult to keep your footing. We asked for a shower mat, and to their credit, the hotel staff supplied one the same day. At the back of the shower tray was a flat tiled area, with no way to drain the water off. Housekeeping did not mop this area clean at all during our stay, so the water was laying there 24/7. Given the number of mosquitos around, this was far from ideal. There were only two small towel hooks, which you could just about hang a hand towel on. One of these was behind the toilet, overhanging the waste bin, and the other was crammed into a 2-3 inch space between the mirror and the shower screen. It was awkward to use, and left the towel dangling on the shelf by the basin, which is naturally wet most of the time. There were better places where the towel hooks, or indeed rails, could have been positioned, and more were needed. The toilet roll holder was situated in an awkward spot, and again could have been better positioned to avoid us having to twist our backs to reach it. Hot water was in short supply throughout our week-long stay. The water from the sink taps was almost always cool to lukewarm, I think I got actual hot water maybe once. The shower was similar, it would maybe get to be very warm by the time you finished your shower, but never hot. The breakfast buffet was mostly fine, though the only fruit juice on offer was orange juice (which I don’t like). The alternative was water. I saw a comment on another review where the hotel said that “apple juice and peach juice” are offered at breakfast; all I can say is that if that’s the case, they kept it very well hidden. Our other main issue was with housekeeping. We had the room cleaned every other day, so they came in 3 times. Not once did they bother to replenish the tea and coffee supplies, and as mentioned, they did not fully clean the bathroom. Items that dropped behind the waste bin, or in the small gap between the shower and the sink, were not cleared up. On one occasion they forgot to replace our towels, and also left a dirty glass on the bathroom shelf. Another time they left replacement toilet rolls, but left the holder empty so we took care of this ourselves. It’s just about the details sometimes. No doubt the hotel will say we should have brought this to their attention, but when I’m on holiday, I don’t want to be instructing hotels that their housekeeping staff need a refresher course on the basics. They were obviously aware that our towels were not replaced one day, as we asked them to bring us a fresh set. Some other points about the hotel – there is no mini-washing line / clothes dryer on the balcony, so everyone hangs their towels over the balcony rail. You’ll need the large beach towel clips to keep them in place. There is a kettle in the room, but you’ll probably have to ask for tea and coffee as housekeeping were reluctant to replenish the supplies. The fridge (which the hotel proudly describes as free) was old and did not seem to work very well, as water collected in the bottom. No doubt I should have taken time out of my holiday to report this to reception too. There are no lifts, and our room was up two flights of stairs, so be aware of this if you have mobility issues. A member of staff helped us with luggage when we checked in. I read reviews beforehand which said that the noise from the planes was not loud – I would disagree. Indeed, as we were being shown to our room on arrival, the member of staff had to stop talking as a plane went overhead, drowning him out! Some planes were louder than others, and I imagine it depends too on wind direction, and whether they are taking off or landing. But you can certainly hear them. The outdoor bar at the hotel stayed open quite late (around 1am I think) and one night people there were talking loudly and laughing, which we could hear quite clearly from our building at the back of the hotel grounds. On the plus side, I liked the location of the hotel, on the road leading down to the beach. There are plenty of bars and restaurants on the main road that you can walk to easily. As mentioned, the staff on reception and in the restaurant were all friendly and helpful, and we were given a free bottle of water in our room on arrival. The beds were quite comfortable. If I return to Kalamaki, I would choose a different hotel, as there are plenty of other options nearby.
