The hotel was wonderful and we really felt the staff excelled and created a warm, comfortable atmosphere. The holiday itself got off to a rocky start with luggage being delayed, but the staff tried to help direct us to places to buy supplies etc. Both pools were absolutely golden, the kids pool especially kept my daughters (ages 10 & 5) entertained for hours on end and we felt little need to leave the hotel which was helpful as it was so very hot. Both areas were clean and well maintained. Variety of food at both breakfast and dinner buffet was good, even my fussy 5 year old managed to find something to eat. I am Gluten & lactose free and in all honesty I did struggle with dinner choice for myself, and was sick a few times due to probably eating something I shouldn’t have by mistake. Breakfast had clear Gluten free options which was very much appreciated. Rooms were a good size, we had a 2 bedroom suite which was roomy for the 4 of us. The room was decorated nicely, we felt bathrooms in particular could do with a little touch up. Location was great - a short walk from a lovely beach and another short walk into the local town. The heat did stop us from doing the latter, but we do hope that when we visit again, we will do so earlier in the year when it’s a little cooler. I felt I needed to take a point off to make the scoring 4 stars because of the following reasons - 1. Ants. Our room had alot of ants and upon speaking with other guests, it seems to be a problem within the hotel. We appreciate that perhaps not much could be done, but we feel that some maintenance (filling in holes, more sealant) would help the problem. We mentioned the ants a few times but felt it was more or less dismissed. 2. The pool bar had great food in general but not many choices for me as a GF and a Dairy/lactose free customer. I mentioned that the hotel restaurant have gluten free bread so could they not make me a sandwich using that and they were insistent that this was not possible. They got quite irritated when I asked a second day if this could be done - so I pretty much ate chips every day. 3. Breakfast and dinner buffet ends very early. Breakfast ends at 10am with things being cleared away about 9.45. We feel this could be extended until 10.30-11am as no one wants to wake up early on holiday, especially with such long, hot & tiring days ahead. Dinner also ends at 9pm and there is no way to get food after this time. We missed dinner a couple of times due to sorting out luggage issues and was met with shrugged shoulders when asked where we can get food from. 4. When checking in with no luggage (thank you British Airways) we asked if the hotel had a supply of toothbrushes, toothpaste etc to get us through our first night and the hotel did not. The porter mentioned the luggage issue happens alot, so we were surprised the hotel does not stock these basic amenities for these situations of they happen so often. Every hotel I have stayed in the past, supply basic amenities. All in all a great stay. Thank you Hotel Marelen, we really do hope to see you again some time in the future.
