We visited Lily in November and as usual we had a wonderful time. We are multi-repeaters there and we really do feel like it’s our second home and the fantastic staff make us feel so special. This trip we broke from using our usual BA and took the Etihad flights instead which were very comfortable with great food and the early arrival time meant we were at Lily in time for breakfast. We thought that the resort looked in great condition and were reassured to hear that the plans for refurbishment of rooms don’t require the resort to close. We stayed in Lagoon Villa which we thought did need a bit of TLC but had most a fabulous garden, in fact all the gardens around the island are looking great, probably the best we have seen them over 20 years. We also had a few nights in a water villa, which although getting on a bit now are probably unique in the Maldives for their large size and spacing. We did a night snorkel for the first time which was fun, seeing sealife by torchlight that we wouldn’t normally encounter, including a particularly close encounter with a nurse shark – a natural encounter unlike the organised trips of which more later. We went out with Watersports to the nearby manta point which was great but unfortunately the number of boats visiting there is increasing so it’s only a matter of time before that area becomes spoilt which will be a great shame. As ever we loved eating at Vibes for lunch where Peter and his team of Hassan Ali, Mohammed Didi and Anu are so attentive and thoughtful. We love it up there. And we enjoy our meals at Aqua where Chef Nuwan serves up the most delightful dishes and Saeed in particular is always very engaging as is our old friend Hari who seems to sense our arrival and is waiting with two glasses of Tattinger. We were very pleased to meet the new executive Chef Alissio who prepared some stunning meals for us in Lily Maa where we were looked after as usual by Abdulla. Thanks Chef! We must also thank Dr Lydia who looked after me when I became a bit unwell. She is a real asset for Lily. While we love Lily and will not hesitate to book our next visit as soon as we can, there are a couple of things that we are really not happy with. The evening fish feeding while popular with some guests is not something that I believe Lily should be doing anymore. The sheer number of sharks coming to be fed shows that their behaviour is being changed and this isn’t right and doesn’t enhance the resorts environmental credentials. Nor do I think Lily should be promoting the trips operated by an external company to swim with nurse sharks during the day. It is only a matter of time before one of Lily’s precious guests is mistaken for a piece of food waste and injured or worse. I wish they would stop both activities. They don’t need to do it. But anyway, we still love Lily and would highly recommend it to anyone. We can’t wait to go back for our 20th visit.
