We were really looking forward to returning to Labranda Mares, having had a perfect trip in April 2023. Sadly, our recent 10-night stay from late March into April 2024 was a major disappointment — not because the hotel has fundamentally changed, but because it simply couldn't cope with the number of guests. The resort was extremely crowded, with constant queueing and a lack of available seating. Families were struggling to find tables for dinner, and although the official dinner time starts at 7pm, guests were being allowed in early to claim seats — essentially jumping the queue and causing chaos. We witnessed people filming the queues, others complaining to staff, and a general atmosphere of frustration in the evenings. The lobby was absolutely packed most nights, with nowhere indoors to sit, and the queue for the lobby bar became unmanageable — often just one member of staff trying to serve a huge number of guests. People were resorting to bulk-ordering drinks and platefuls of food to avoid going through the ordeal twice. Queues of 30–45 minutes for freshly grilled meat or pizza were not uncommon. It got so bad that we ended up spending most evenings in our room. Unfortunately, even our room wasn’t a refuge. In Room 2109, the shower fluctuated wildly between cold and scalding hot and needed constant adjustment. The air conditioning only blew cold air, so we tried sleeping with the door open — which worked on some nights, until guests arrived in the early hours. The reversing buggies have an alarm that sounds like a smoke detector and go off every 10–20 minutes, making it incredibly hard to sleep. Breakfast coffee was another letdown — the machines mostly produced very weak drinks, and it wasn’t until the last two days that we found the one bean-to-cup machine tucked to the left side of the bar, which actually made a decent coffee. We were told by staff that the hotel had very few employees on-site to handle the high volume of guests, and it showed — there simply weren’t enough people, tables, or infrastructure to meet demand. Despite the above, we do want to highlight that: The spa was very good. Mares the dog kept us feeling secure and safe, guarding the entry point down by the boardwalk/beach. Cleaners were excellent and friendly. Reception staff were great, and the technician who fixed our safe was efficient and helpful. The waiting staff were kind and attentive, and respectful of when we wanted space — they truly did their best under difficult circumstances. We love this hotel, and it makes us genuinely sad to have had such a negative experience this time around. We hope things improve, as we’d love to be able to return someday to the magical stay we remembered from 2023.
