It’s often possible to find large communal barbecues being held on the public beaches during New Year's Eve night. One surprise custom you may encounter is carol singing, which is undertaken from house to house around the Maldives on New Year's Eve. The singers move about the local residents’ dwellings, providing entertainment and are rewarded by being offered a selection of foods specially prepared for the occasion.
