If your kids are like ours, the top pick for a late deal is the classic family beach holiday. For the shortest flights with guaranteed warm weather, we absolutely love Greece (with a bit of ancient history) and the amazing value of Turkey (barely half an hour longer on the plane). If you're happy to travel long-haul wiht your kids, the super-glam worlds of the Caribbean and Indian Ocean open up. Movie-set beaches in the Bahamas and Barbados, or island atolls in the Maldives and Seychelles. If you like bling-bling then ultra-modern Dubai will float your boat. For the even more exotic, go further east into Asia to the tropical oases of Thailand and Bali.

Don't try to book the family peak dates at the last minute (yes, that's literally any of the school holiday weeks) unless you don't mind where you go. There will always be late deals even in high-season, but the deals will dictate where you go, not you! Sometimes we just want a bit of sun but, when it's a miserable wintery weather her in the UK, we prefer to go big (then go home) by choosing from the hundreds of last minute ski holidays. A beach is hard to beat, but the alpine landscape of the Gods does just that. And it's hard to beat a holiday where you actually lose weight!
