The cuisine of Rhodes reflects thousands of years of history and culture and is influenced by Greek, Ottoman and Italian cultures. Based on locally grown ingredients such as organic fruits and vegetables, free range meats and of course freshly caught seafood, Rhodes recipes offer tasty, wholesome food. One of the most popular options is the meze; consisting of many small dishes; a meze can be hot or cold and based around meat or fish, with many vegetarian options. Expect to be served Greek salad, breads, lamb or goat ribs, meatballs, shrimp, sardines and octopus. Another Rhodes staple is seafood; on the menu you will find, lobster spaghetti, fish soup, fried calamari and mussels, all equally fresh and delicious. Finally, don’t forget to visit a traditional taverna to sample home made classics such as shrimp cooked in ouzo sauce or pork marinated and baked in wine.

Perhaps the most traditional drink in Rhodes is a distilled spirit called souma. Often made from grapes, but occasionally made from figs, this high alcohol content spirit is usually drank straight and served as an aperitif. Souma can be found in local restaurants and bars across the island and you can even purchase it yourself so why not bring home a bottle to remind you of your trip to Rhodes. Ouzo is the most notorious traditional Greek spirit and Rhodes is no exception to it. Made from aniseed, this liquorice flavoured drink is often served along side mezes and and small plates of food. If hot drinks are more your thing then herbal teas known as ‘tsai’ are a big hit in Rhodes. Made from herbs such as chamomile and sage, tsai can is usually enjoyed during the colder months and can be found in most local cafes.

The music culture in Greece revolves around rhythmic beats and fast tempos. Modern Laika or Laiko Pop is known as the modern folk music of Greece, combining elements of bouzouki folk style with others, a classic in local bars and dance clubs in Rhodes. Oasis Beach Kallithea is nestled in Kalithea, and cherished by many holidaymakers for its chic vibes and incredible atmosphere. The bar is set inside a cave, overlooking the azure waters of Kalithea Beach, and offers the most supreme nightlife settings in Rhodes. Of course, when it comes to athleticism in Rhodes, it's water sports that top the list, with windsurfing and kitesurfing leading the way. As in most European countries, football is Greece's national sport, closely followed by basketball, which won the European championship in 1987. Athlitikos Syllogos Rodos is the official football club based in Rhodes, and Crain Field is the stadium used by the men's football and lacrosse teams. Other favourite national sports include athletics (running in particular), handball, rowing, volleyball and boxing.

The charming Greek town of Rhodes offers plenty of opportunities for shopping in its small yet substantial markets. Other than the big brand names such as H&M, Superdry or Bershka, the coastal town features an eclectic range of shops, varying from bakeries and jewellery stores to art and souvenir stalls for all gift-hunters. Many market stalls sell handmade items like rustic antiques or modern and classic jewellery. Leather goods and traditional Rhoden wines can be purchased on Socrates Street (Odos Socratous), in addition to the famous local honey. If you wish to salvage a designer treat yourself, head to Amerikis Street, with an abundance of stores, from branded clothing items to luxury boutiques. Most businesses in Rhodes are run by local families, for generations, and the shops usually open from early in the morning to late at night.
