Melissani Cave

Melissani is an astonishing underwater lake located in a cave whose open, chiselled ceiling shines directly onto turquoise-tinted waters. This extraordinary underground lake is the result of archaeological excavations dating back to the 3rd century BC.

Visitors can reach this majestic wonder via an underground path and continue their tour of the grotto on board a rowing boat. Melissani lies near the village of Karavomilos, three km from Sami, and if you visit at midday, prepare to be dazzled.

The ruins of the Venetian castle of Assos are located on a green peninsula just above the town of Assos. It is one of the last two fortresses on Kefalonia. Dating back to the 16th century, this spectacular edifice was designed to protect the territory from pirate invasions and the Ottoman Empire. Its mystical ruins contain the abandoned Catholic Church of Saint Markos, the house of the High Commissioner and the Lion of Saint Mark.

Lighthouse of Saint Theodoroi

Situated close to Argostoli, facing the Ionian Sea, the squat lighthouse of Saint Theodoroi stands out with its unique design. Composed of up to 20 white columns in a white, temple-like structure, it deviates from the traditional tall tower style. Gleaming its light up to five miles long, the simple architectural design is reminiscent of the Doric style.
