Things to do in Gouves

Best beaches in Gouves

Although the club scene is not as lively as in neighbouring resorts such as Hersonissos, Gouves still offers a busy nightlife with chic bars and restaurants to suit all tastes. The atmosphere is relaxed, but a few places organise live music evenings. The Guinness Pub in Kato Gouves is considered one of the best pubs in Crete. The best time to visit is during special events such as St Patrick's Day or national holidays. The staff wear brightly coloured accessories and serve specialities for every occasion. The Baraki Bar and the Wembley Bar Lounge Cafe are other popular venues, followed by the Mojito Bar with its magnificent selection of cocktails.

Here in Gouves, food lovers can enjoy true Greek cuisine, with the freshness and flavours that the Minoans established on a daily basis. If you haven't yet visited Island Restaurant, you're in for a treat: seafood specialities such as classic prawn pasta and grilled steak kebabs are served in a minimalist white décor overlooking the magnificent blue of the ocean.

Taverna Milos prepares traditional Greek dishes and pizzas in an authentic setting amid a lush botanical garden - an intimate atmosphere for couples. Finally, Taverna Spyros deserves a special mention for its delicious meals served under a canopy of lush foliage with excellent service.

From beachfront kiosks to supermarket stores and local goods, plenty of shopping opportunities await in Gouves. Start with the local shops selling unique souvenirs and hand-crafted items to secure a memorable treasure to take home, plus homemade delights that will fill your suitcase in rich aromas such as freshly made honey and oil oil. The small stores that align the water’s edge will provide all the seascape essentials such as beachwear, hats, and blow-up floats. Don’t forget all the jewellery stores and quaint boutiques offering a selection of fashion items plus the big-branded names for bargain prices.

Watersports

Diving in Gouves

We know how attractive the blue waters are at Gouves, and with clear visibility, it's the obvious destination. However, Gouves has no diving centre. Nearby Agia Pelagia is renowned for its marine life and crystal clear waters, with several dive sites for all levels of experience. If you haven't already, head to Diving Centre Crete or Stay Wet Diving Club to explore some of the majestic underwater wonders, from secluded caves to coral reefs and spectacular rock formations. Last time we checked, Heraklion, the capital of Crete, was offering diving excursions to the famous wreck of the MS Rosalie.

Surfing in Gouves

Due to its location in northern Crete, surfing is not on the list of the best water sports in Gouves. The weather conditions and wave patterns in the area make it unsuitable for surfing. The best chance of surfing is in autumn and winter, between the end of September and the end of February, when the strong winds are blowing and the waves are building. The beaches of Malia and Hersonissos tend to offer the best conditions for surfing, although this can vary.

Windsurfing & kitesurfing in Gouves

Heraklion Windsurfing Club, Iraklio Kite Club and Sam Watersports are just some of the locations we recommend for watersports adventures. With the prevailing Maltemi winds during summer, conditions are ideal for windsurfing, offering both calm experiences and thrilling rides. Anissaras Beach, with its vast expanse of azure waters, provides ample space for various gliding activities, along with windsurfing schools catering to both beginners and advanced enthusiasts. Alternatively, if you're staying near Hersonissos, the main beach serves as an excellent alternative for watersports enthusiasts of all levels.

Sailing in Gouves

Would you like the wind to blow through your hair while you're sailing the high seas with a mojito in hand? Set off on a luxury yacht cruise to explore the magical ambience of Crete's neighbouring islands, such as Dia Island. We recommend Vintage Sailing Crete or Yachters Hersonissos Sailing in nearby Hersonissos for a glamorous experience.

Fishing in Gouves

Gouves offers something for every angler, whether you prefer relaxing shore fishing or an exciting deep-sea adventure. Reel in a variety of species, including sea bream, sea bass, red mullet, and even mackerel (kolios) under the glorious Cretan sunshine. Hire a boat from Catamaran Evasion Crete, to the right of Gouves beach, and start your next fishing escapade.

Canoeing & kayaking in Gouves

Coastal kayaking in Gouves can be truly spectacular. Visit Gouves Watersports equipment hire and take part in guided kayak trips or explore the pristine waters on your own. You can paddle along crystal-clear shores, discover hidden coves and, best of all, breathe in the fresh, salty sea air in picturesque settings. With a coastline of cascading rock formations, you can navigate through caves and marvel at their natural beauty. Canoeing on inland waterways is also a rewarding experience: rivers, lagoons and lakes are all accessible and offer scenic routes with local flora and fauna for a memorable experience.

Land activities

Golf in Gouves

Unfortunately, Gouves doesn't have its own golf courses, but you can still find golfing facilities within easy reach. Whether you're an expert putter or a beginner, head to Crete Golf Club's 18-hole championship course. With views of the Cretan Sea and olive groves, the course has been designed to challenge golfers of all abilities and has a clubhouse with plenty of practice facilities. In the western part of Crete, visit the Dunes Golf Course, nestled in the Costa Navarino Resort. Another championship course with undeniable charm, it is one of Greece's top golf destinations.

Cycling & mountain biking in Gouves

Gouves' mountains offer a playground for cyclists, with scenic routes that wind through rugged landscapes and unveil breathtaking vistas. Immerse yourself in nature as you explore the network of charming paths and quiet country lanes. A particularly rewarding route is the Morais de Maroeuil, taking you through enchanting woods and culminating at the historic treasures of Habarcq.

Walking & hiking in Gouves

Gouves is a walker's paradise, offering a variety of trails to suit all paces and preferences. Take a leisurely stroll along the beach, feeling the refreshing sea breeze and the warmth of the sun on your skin. Venture inland and explore the network of picturesque country trails. These walks will leave you in awe of the captivating beauty of the Cretan landscape.

Looking for a more challenging adventure? Consider the Rozaz Gorge, named for its impressive pink and red rock formations. Some hikers claim that the views rival those of the Samaria Gorge. Hike through a deeply carved canyon teeming with a variety of flora and fauna. Start your adventure in the village of Gonies, near Mohos and Avdou, and climb gradually to discover the breathtaking beauty of the gorge.
