However, it's important to note that while the weather is fantastic, summer is also peak tourist season in Greece, so expect islands to be much busier.

It's no secret that Greece is home to some of the most stunning beaches in the world: the iconic Shipwreck beach in Zakynthos, the sparkling lagoons of Crete and the red or black sandy havens that stand out against the backdrop of a spectacular caldera. While the waters are swimmable year-round, they become comfortably warm for most swimmers around May. Sun worshippers seeking the hottest temperatures for sunbathing will find the summer months ideal. However, some visitors enjoy the cooler water and smaller crowds of the shoulder seasons (spring and fall). No matter the time of year, Greece's sapphire waters offer a refreshing escape.
The best time of year for diving and snorkelling in Greece is between May and mid-September, with mild weather and calm, crystal-clear waters. All of Greece's remote islets, rocky coves and crystal-clear lagoons are waiting to be explored, with thousands of snorkelling sites. Diving is available all along the Greek coast, but you'll find the most unique experiences in different regions.
The Ionian Islands are renowned for their snow-white beaches and azure waters, set between limestone cliffs and lush foliage. In Zakynthos, the bay of Navagio offers unrivalled diving, and you may come across graceful loggerhead turtles. You can spot them at Laganas Beach, Cameo Island and Dafni Beach. The island of Marathonisi, or Turtle Island, is home to famous sea caves with excellent diving sites.
The city of Athens offers both modernity and history, but there are some great snorkelling spots around the harbor. South of the city, as far as Cape Sounion, you'll find mountainous coves with translucent lagoons at Cape Lemos, Charakas beach, Megalo Kavouri and Cape Sounion.
The islands of the Cyclades offer many opportunities for snorkeling. Mykonos, in particular, is home to rainbow-coloured reefs with legions of fish and beautiful scenery. Visit the beaches of Paragia and Paradise Beach, and on the south-east coast, the beaches of Agia Anna, Lia and Frangias will delight all curious divers.
Although some parts of Greece offer perfect conditions for surfing, with natural currents and summer winds (think [Island name] in the Aegean), windsurfing and kitesurfing are more popular activities. The prime season for surfing is between November and March. During this period, strong Atlantic currents and wind swells create ideal waves, transforming western Crete into a surfer's paradise. Surf centers in Chrissi Akti (Chania), Agia Marina, Paleochora and Falasarna Beach cater to surfers of all levels. You might even find shoulder seasons (October-November, March-April) offering decent waves on some islands.

The year begins with cooler temperatures and higher levels of rain, with some regions like Delphi even getting snow! Temperatures can vary slightly from region to region, but on average can reach 8°C. This time of year is ideal for visiting historic wonders, as they tend to be less crowded. On 6 January, Epiphany is celebrated; the priest blesses the bodies of water and the Greeks throw themselves into the water to retrieve the cross thrown by the priest and ensure good luck and fortune for the coming year.

The mild climate continues into February, but remains a pleasant escape from the harsh British winters. The days are cloudy and rainy, but the sunshine increases throughout the month.
Greece in March
The green valleys of Greece begin to blossom as spring arrives in the region. The average temperature in the country can reach 16°C, with low humidity, and inviting sea temperatures reach 15°C. The sun shines for up to 10 hours a day, and Greek festivals are held throughout the month to make your stay as pleasant as possible. The Greek Independence Day festival, held every year on the 25th, features folk dances in traditional dress, military parades and lively music.

April is a very mild month in Greece, with average highs reaching up to 19°C and much less rain compared to winter. This warm climate is ideal for strolling around in light clothing during the day. However, evenings can be cooler, so packing layers is advisable. Don't miss Greek Orthodox Easter, which falls on May 5th in 2024 and April 20 in 2025. It's a vibrant celebration with delicious food and is considered the most important festival in Greece.

All the island destinations start to come alive, with maximum temperatures averaging 23°C and sea temperatures rising to 19°C. Beach days will be much more comfortable to get that sun-kissed complexion!

As June arrives, the hot weather intensifies. The Pindus Mountains to the north shield the western regions from rain, while the eastern Aegean coast enjoys virtually no rainfall. The 27°C heat might be moderated by the cool sea breezes, but the azure Aegean Sea is perfect for cooling off with refreshing water sports like windsurfing. This month is also a highlight for culture lovers. The Athens and Epidaurus Festival comes alive with all kinds of plays, including the summer's star attraction: the ancient plays performed in the magnificent Epidaurus theatre.

In November, temperatures drop a few degrees compared with October.
