Although most of the past few months see wetter days, September comes with a window of no rain commonly known as the Petit Carême. Lasting anywhere from mid-September to mid-October, this mini-break comes with glorious sunshine and a much-needed interruption from the showers. Make the most of this period as it’s another perfect opportunity to holiday in Trinidad and Tobago.
This phenomenal interruption in the weather offers perfect conditions to celebrate Republic Day with the locals. Celebrating the island's independence in 1962, the festivities are no less than any others throughout the year, with parades, dances, and fetes. The sense of community is at its highest this month, with the locals' making heaps of traditional dishes and sharing them with friends and family.
While the islands are much quieter this month, it’s a perfect time to make the most of the short window of dry weather during Petit Carême. Head up to one of the most striking sights in the east, Mount St. Benedict Monastery in Trinidad. This makes for fantastic hiking or cycling opportunities, with views second to none.
For the bird enthusiasts, September is a fabulous month to head to Little Tobago Island to spot the array of species that flock here during the month. Whilst here, spend a few hours at Goat Island, home to the famous Angel Reef for some snorkelling in one of the best reefs in Tobago. The warm temperatures this month make the water more than comfortable for a swim.
Balmy temperatures of 31°C and lows of 20°C can be expected this month again, with a high chance of rainfall. As it’s a tropical climate, expect the rain showers to occur in short bursts, followed by the glorious sun for the rest of the day. The sea is at its warmest, sitting at 28°C, making it the perfect month for thrill seekers and families.
