Celebrating the Islamic culture of the islands, Hosay is a festival which commemorates the martyrdom of the grandsons of Muhammed (the prophet of Islam). Consisting of colourful parades, chanting and music the festival lasts ten days in the month and the dates are determined by the lunar calendar. The locals carry models of mosques down the streets, also called Tadjah’s, crafted from bamboo, coloured paper and sometimes even glass. Head to the capital, Port of Spain to witness yet another culture of the diverse islands.
Maracas Beach is a great little spot to visit this month, especially while there are fewer crowds across the islands. The warm sea temperatures are fantastic for snorkelling and swimming, and to escape those short bursts of rain, the beach is lined with restaurants and bars offering all things authentic and sweet. Around an hour's drive inland, you will find Maracas Waterfall. The trek up here is one for the books, the senses come alive, and your worries get left below as you head up to the gorgeous, hidden waterfall. Have your camera ready for this one.
Explore the green glory of the rainforests that put these islands on the map. Head to the Bocas Islands, or locally known as Down De Islands, a group of five islands sitting between Trinidad and Venezuela, each brimming with wildlife, caves, and rainforests. Accessible by short boat rides from Crews Inn, Chaguaramas, the islands offer all from adventure to relaxation. Before heading to the islands, check out the new zipline in Chaguaramas for a thrill second to none.
November continues to see highs of 30°C and lows of 20°C. Although scattered with short, sharp showers, the weather remains hot, sunny and balmy. The cooler evenings are the perfect chance to take a stroll along the beach and enjoy the sunset.
