Right off the back of St Lucia Carnival comes two more fantastic events where you can experience St Lucia’s cultural heritage: The Roots and Soul Festival and La Rose Festival. Like the St Lucia Jazz Festival, the Roots and Soul Festival is a celebration of Caribbean talent across multiple genres, including reggae, hip-hop and calypso. With events taking place from Rodney Bay to Pigeon National Park, we advise you to grab one of the well-priced tickets and dip in and out of the festival while enjoying all that St Lucia has to offer.
After the Roots and Soul Festival comes La Rose Festival. This festival is a celebration of one of the historic St Lucian societies, Les Roses. Throughout August, members demonstrate their loyalty to Les Roses in true Caribbean style, with an explosion of song, dance and colour. Every member of the society is sorted into a mock hierarchy, with the king and queen accompanied by a sizable entourage. During the parade, the hierarchy is strictly disciplined, so you may see offenders taken before a ‘magistrate’ for a mock trial. However, this early discipline soon gives way to an unforgettable night full of dance, drinking and feasting.
With so many unforgettable events to experience this August, your dream Caribbean holiday is tantalisingly close. We recommend staying at one of the many fantastic resorts near Soufriere, such as Ladera Resort, where you can enjoy well-earned days on the beach with Castries 45 minutes away. Ladera Resort is nestled amid St Lucia’s incredible biodiversity, with verdant jungle on one side juxtaposing the brilliant blues, corals and sands of the Caribbean Sea. From Ladera Resort you can hike directly to the Toraille Waterfall, where water cascades down around 50 feet into an idyllic rock pool. Take a refreshing dip in this tranquil garden, while hummingbirds flit energetically between the trees.
If you’re staying further north, we recommend heading to Pigeon Island beach. The beaches near Rodney Bay can get busy, but this beach is a great compromise if you want to relax on a sun-soaked beach without being thronged by people. Best of all is the friendly St Lucian’s selling hollowed-out pineapples filled with ice and rum punch.
In August, St Lucia has an average temperature of 28°C, with highs of 31°C and lows of 25°C. It can be wet and cloudy so make sure you prepare for some showers and thunderstorms, although showers tend to be limited to brief downpours.
