Mexico geography

Mexico is the third-largest country in Latin America, the northern region shares a border with the United States. The west and south meets the Pacific Ocean, the east is bounded to the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean Sea. The south-eastern region borders Guatemala and Belize. There are also some islands and archipelagos that are parts of Mexico, such as Cozumel and Isla Mujeres off the Yucatán Peninsula. Mexico’s terrain varies between regions, you’ll find sweeping mountains and deep canyons in the centre, vast deserts in the north and thick, tropical rainforests in the south and east regions.

Mexico history

The Olmec people lived in the south-eastern region of Mexico around 1200 B.C, they are the first known civilisation of Mexico. The Olmec were followed by the Maya, Toltec and Aztec civilisations. In the early 1500s, the Spanish Empire conquered Mexico, they ruled until 1821. By 1523, Catholic missionaries arrived in Mexico and started building monasteries, they converted millions of people to Roman Catholicism, which is now the country’s dominant religion. In more recent history, Porfírio Díaz’s dictatorship created an extremely unbalanced distribution of wealth, leading to the Mexican Revolution in 1910, this civil war lasted 10 years. Unfortunately, an imbalance of wealth still exists in Mexico today, however, tourism is a major contributor to the country’s economy.
