Best activities in Guadeloupe for families

The Caribbean is all about sun, sea and sandcastles so you can easily get away with spending very little on activities and excursions in Guadeloupe.

One of the best days you can spend away from the beach is also the cheapest. At Guadeloupe National Park you can hike through the forest, swim in a waterfall and watch exotic wildlife, all for free. There are 100s of miles of well-marked trails, catered to all different skill levels. Older kids will enjoy the hike to the famous Soufrière volcano, the highest peak of the Lesser Antilles. Pack sandwiches, snacks and plenty of water as the journey there and back takes 3-4 hours.

This part of the Caribbean is great for island hopping. Take a ferry to one of the smaller Guadeloupe islands of La Désirade or Les Saintes. Explore the fisherman village and local markets of Les Saintes then take a trip up to Fort Napoleon for an educational, yet fascinating day out. Kids will love the botanical cactus garden, the roaming iguanas and exploring the former prison cells. Even if you have no interest in history, there is a spectacular view of Les Saintes Bay and Terre-de-Haut’s distinctive Pain de Sucre peak from the top of this hill.

Other top places for families are Guadeloupe Zoo and La Maison du Cacao, a chocolate plantation in Basse-Terre.

Best destinations in Guadeloupe for families

The best place for a family holiday in Guadeloupe is the south coast of Grand Terre, where the resort-style hotels are found. There are some fantastic hotels to choose from and the most beautiful golden beaches to spend your days on. If your kids love watersports, you’ll find shallow reefs and crystal-clear waters along the south-coast, perfect for exploring. Try out scuba diving, a snorkelling excursion or a trip on a glass-bottomed boat to see schools of fish, colourful reefs and an eagle ray, green sea turtle, barracuda or lemon shark if you are lucky! If your kids aren’t great swimmers, bring a swim float vest as boat operators may not supply them. Easy (and free) snorkelling spots can be found on the beach in Plage Caravelle, just make sure that you bring your own snorkelling gear, and the kids will be entertained for hours exploring all the sea life.

Best hotels in Guadeloupe for families

Guadeloupe is a family-friendly island with wonderful hotels that suit the needs of a family. What is great about Guadeloupe is that you won’t find any mega-sized resorts here. Instead, expect charming hotels and friendly vibes. Generally, service is excellent, even if a little laid back – towel deliveries may be slow and waiter service relaxed but will always be presented with a big smile. No one is hurrying anywhere in Guadeloupe, so kick back under a palm tree with a book and enjoy your new easy-going lifestyle.

All-inclusive is a popular option with families due to the ease of having everything in one place and all activities included in the package price. All inclusive specialists, Club Med, have a fantastic family resort on the south coast of Grande-Terre. Set on a beautiful stretch of beach, Club Med La Caravelle offers a vibrant island paradise full of fun-filled adventures. The hotel offers endless watersports including kayaking, stand up paddle boarding and sailing as well as unique activities like learning flying trapeze at circus school and archery. Packages include flights, transfers, luxury accommodation, all meals and snacks, drinks, most activities and kids club from 4-17 years (childcare for 4 months – 3 years is available at extra cost).

Le Creole Beach Hotel & Spa is a large resort centrally locates in Gosier. Families will love the huge pool, beach and kids club. There are 3 restaurants in the resort which makes feeding the family easy. Rooms are basic, but hey, how long will you spend in your room when you are in an island paradise?
