Guadeloupe Easter holidays

Spring is the perfect time to plan a holiday to Guadeloupe. The crowds have gone, temperatures are pleasant (averaging 27°C), and the chance of rain is low. Travelling during the dry season offers a great opportunity to explore Guadeloupe’s National Park, hike La Grande Soufrière volcano and search for Carbet Falls, 3 spectacular cascading waterfalls.

Easter is widely celebrated in Guadeloupe: it is a time for church services, celebrations and meeting up with friends and family. There are lots of family-friendly events across the islands and a real buzz during the long weekend. Both religious ceremonies and modern celebrations are usual in Guadeloupe at Easter – from Easter Morning Mass to chocolate bunnies and egg painting.

Easter traditions in Guadeloupe

One of the most popular Easter traditions in Guadeloupe is camping on the beach. Beaches and rivers in Guadeloupe are open to camping during the Easter weekend as an opportunity for friends and family to spend quality time together and celebrate the end of lent. Expect picnics, BBQs, swimming and music throughout the weekend until Monday evening.

Crab traps are set a month ahead of Easter in preparation for the famous Matété dish served at Easter. Land crabs are bought and kept alive until Easter weekend to make the stuffed crab dish. Land crabs are used as they have more flavour than ocean crabs. This is a popular dish in Guadeloupe which people look forward to eating all year.

Churches will hold several services over the holiday, including Holy Thursday, Good Friday and Easter Sunday Mass. Easter Monday is a public holiday and a day off for the general public. Schools and most local shops will be closed.
