Best Time To Visit Grenada

Grenada is one of the hidden gems of the Caribbean. Consisting of a handful of islands and islets situated at the end of the Grenadines Island chain, Grenada boasts sweeping expanses of white beach, cascading waterfalls, verdant rainforest and epic views, all without the levels of mass development that can be found in more established Caribbean destinations. So, when is the best time to travel to Grenada?

While Grenada has no shortage of things to do or good weather throughout the year, we recommend booking your trip in the peak season, between December and May. There are generally more events, lower levels of humidity and rainfall than in the wet season months, and you are guaranteed high average temperatures 28°C. Between the months of June and November there are still predominantly sunny forecasts, plenty of unforgettable experiences and cheaper rates across hotels and flights. Whether you decide to go in the peak season, the shoulder season, or the low season, we can help you tailor your dream Caribbean holiday to Grenada.

Weather in Grenada

Grenada has an archetypal Caribbean climate, with sunny weather throughout the year. Like other Caribbean destinations, there is a cooler, dry season from January to mid-April and a humid, wet season from June to December. In the dry season, calm, north-easterly trade winds reduce humidity levels and act as a cooling balm for the hotter days and nights. During the wet season months, the winds recede, leading to more frequent rainfall and higher levels of humidity. It is also important to note that the Caribbean hurricane season runs between June and November but usually peaks in the months of August and September, so if you are booking a holiday during these months, you should check weather alerts before you travel.

Seasonality in Grenada

If you’re looking to get out to Grenada but not sure when to go, you should weigh up the advantages and disadvantages of travelling in the peak season or the low season. We have condensed these factors below so you can make the best decision according to what you want from your holiday to Grenada.

Peak season in Grenada

Grenada’s peak season falls between December and April. During these months, you’re guaranteed eight hours of sunshine every day and average temperatures of 28°C. There is also a relaxing breeze which makes the heat a lot more comfortable, instead of the occasionally intense humid heat that can characterise low season months. Heading to Grenada in the high season allows you to make the most of all that Grenada has to offer, whether that be relaxing on the idyllic Grand Anse Beach, hiking up to Annandale Falls or experiencing expansive Caribbean views from Fort George. There is also a wide range of events and festivals taking place, such as the Carriacou Festival and celebrations for Grenadian Independence Day. However, high season is also when tourists from colder climes seek winter sun, so you may have to contend with higher prices and more crowds, especially at well-known destinations such as Grand Anse beach.

Low season in Grenada

Low season in Grenada falls between May and November. During these months, prices are relatively low compared to the high season, so you will be able to experience Grenada’s beautiful beaches, verdant jungles and turquoise waters without paying the same prices as in the high season. There is a wide range of festivals and events to look forward to, our pick being the highly anticipated Grenada Carnival.

The major drawback is that during low season months, particularly between July and September, there is more rainfall and humidity. While low season rainfall can be consistent, it is usually limited to short showers. The real drawback is the humidity, which makes the climate much more intense. Activities such as hiking and sightseeing become more exerting, and often mean you need to be near the sea or bar for frequent refreshment.

Holidays in Grenada

The biggest advantage of a holiday to Grenada is its diversity; simply put, there is so much to do throughout the year. Whether you are a beach enthusiast, an expert diver, an amateur snorkeller, a foodie or culture lover, Grenada never ceases to amaze with the many things you can do during your holiday.

No Caribbean holiday is complete without time spent at the beach. The best time to visit Grenada’s beautiful beaches is during the high season and shoulder season months between October and June. During these months there is less rainfall, and the beaches are hot without being humid. If you decide to travel to Grenada, you should head to Grande Anse Beach. Grand Anse has a reputation for being one of the most stunning beaches in the Caribbean, and for good reason; it is a majestic, sweeping expanse of white sand juxtaposed with brilliant blue waters and the verdant greens of Caribbean flora. Grenada’s beaches drink in the sun throughout the year, so whether you travel in June or in January, you can grab a well-priced sunlounger, kick back and relax in the Caribbean sun. The sea temperature is always perfect for a dip, averaging 27 °C in the high season and 29 °C in the low season.

It is important to note that in the high season Grand Anse can get busy, but there are still lots of hidden beaches in Grenada which rarely draw the crowds, such as Morne Rouge, Sandy Island Beach and Magazine Beach.

The prime time for snorkelling and diving is during the high season months from December to April. Light trade winds groom the water and make the oceans that flank Grenada, the Caribbean and the Atlantic, serenely calm and perfect for diving and snorkelling. During these months, you are also more likely to see the full extent of Grenada’s incredible underwater biodiversity, with rays, turtles and dolphins regularly seen alongside more commonly found underwater denizens such as tropical fish, seahorses and eels.

Grenada does not boast the same high-quality waves that can be found in neighbouring islands such as Puerto Rico. That said, Grenadian surf spots can switch on, and if they do, there are unlikely to be crowds. Prickly Point can throw up a reeling left with lots of nice sections, and other beaches offer small waves for longboarders and stand-up paddleboarders. If you are hoping to surf in Grenada, the best time to go is during the months of November and April, as this is when longer period swells originate in the Atlantic and there is less wind.

The best time for sightseeing and activities is generally in the high and shoulder season months between October and May. During these months, there are low levels of humidity which is important for outdoor enthusiasts. Hiking in high levels of Caribbean humidity during the low season months can be quite exerting, and tour guides tend to offer reduced services during these months due to lower demand. However, the Grenada Carnival takes place in August and if there is a single event which encapsulates Grenada’s proud Caribbean heritage, it is Carnival. As always, our Caribbean experts can help you design your dream Grenadian holiday.

Month by month guide to visiting Grenada

Grenada in January

January is a great time to visit Grenada, as the weather is a world away from the winter climes of the northern hemisphere. With average temperatures of 27°C and lower humidity, the weather is perfect for earning an enviable tan on the beach, but also for checking out Grenada’s vibrant cultural heritage.

We recommend checking out the cobbled, colonial alleyways of St George’s. This is Grenada’s capital and where many of the best Grenadian events take place. For example, you could enjoy great music and food at the Spice Island Billfish Tournament, or you can check out the New Year’s Eve celebrations taking place. New Year’s Eve celebrations are no low-key affair here, and most of the island’s resorts will host their own private beach parties.

The Grenada Sailing Festival Work Boat Regatta is a fun, welcoming event which takes place on Grand Anse. You can get a great view of locally constructed boats competing chaotically directly from your perch on the beach. After the competition, the bars come alive with dancing and drinking.
