September is a little quieter when it comes to events, as the heat and chance of storms increase. Nevertheless, you’ll still find some fiesta patronal for various saints throughout the month. On 24th September, Our Lady of Mercedes Day is celebrated to honour the Virgin Mary, the saint of the Dominican Republic. On 29th September, San Miguel (not the Filipino/Philippine beer) is celebrated across the country. As the patron saint of the military, there is a presence from the armed forces, so don’t be alarmed, and enjoy the spectacle. You’ll find lots of horses involved, the colours red, green and white in abundance, plenty of beer, copious rum cocktails and colourful cakes.
As September is the off-peak season in the Dominican Republic, you can take advantage of some great hotel rates and package holiday offers across the island. This is the perfect opportunity for a cheap luxury beach holiday in Punta Cana or an all-inclusive getaway in La Romana.
As it can be hot and humid, we’d recommend a coastal or beachside resort in the Dominican Republic like Puerto Plata, La Romana or Punta Cana to make the most of the soothing trade winds and inviting azure waters. These are excellent bases for exploring all the country has to offer or just letting the sand sift between your toes while relaxing in the magnificent scenery.
In September the Dominican Republic has an average temperature of 28°C, with highs of 32°C and lows of 24°C. Statistically, the chance of rain is relatively low with an average of just 5 days of rain in the month. That said, this is the peak month of the hurricane season, and when it rains in September, it will be in a sharp burst. Most days will be hot and sunny, but you should check the hurricane forecast before you travel. You can use any rain showers as a break from the beach life and explore the city’s old town, go shopping, visit a casino or take a tour of a rum or cigar factory. There’s so much more to the Dominican Republic than the tropical beaches.
