You'll start to find tourism on the island getting into full swing as January progresses. Punta Cana's 50km of white sand beaches and a wide choice of hotels has plenty of space for everyone. Plus, Higuey is under an hour away from Punta Cana if you want to check out Dia De La Altagracia pilgrimage. If you want to dodge the crowds, there are quieter, less busy aspects of Punta Cana like Uvero Alto to the north and the Samana Peninsula. You'll find a comparatively more relaxed feel, small beaches and coves nestled amongst its beautiful countryside. Samana port is an excellent place for whale watching excursions as this is the time of year when the whales migrate to the breeding grounds.
