Not long ago, there were strict restrictions on religious practices within Cuba, so today Christian Cubans take Easter celebrations very seriously. During Holy Week, there are many processions and celebrations, especially in Trinidad. On Good Friday, a solemn and silent procession takes place, followed by music and commemorations on Easter Sunday. Christians usually attend evening mass on Easter Sunday and have a family meal.
A traditional dish in Cuba over the Easter holidays is Bacalao la Vizcaina, which is a salty fish dish with Spanish origins. Havana is home to some beautiful churches and cathedrals. Visit the magnificent Havana Cathedral (Catedral de San Cristobal) and the Virgin Mary of the Immaculate Conception Cathedral (Catedral de la Virgen María de la Concepción Inmaculada).
The cultural capital Havana is an amazing place to be during the Easter season. You’ll usually find plenty of festivals and events in the city throughout April, this is a great way to experience the country’s art, theatre, poetry, music and dance. A highlight is the City in Motion Festival, where the streets of Old Havana light up with phenomenal musicians and dancers from all over the country.
If you want a tropical island experience over Easter, Varadero is the place to be. Crystal-clear waters and gleaming white sand beaches make this an idyllic place to kick back and relax. Although, if you want some excitement, spend the evenings dancing to salsa and merengue in one of Varadero’s bars and nightclubs.
For a luxurious stay in Havana check out Gran Hotel Manzana Kempinski, a grand historic hotel in a super central location of Old Havana. Take in the views of Parque Central and the city from the dazzling rooftop pool and terrace.
If you’ve had enough of the cold and dreaming about sun, sea and cocktails then Varadero is for you. Located on the north coast of Cuba, Varadero is the country’s top beach destination. Sink your toes into powder-soft white sand and bask in the warm, clear sea. We love Iberostar Selection Varadero, Royalton Hicacos Resort & Spa and Melia Internacional. Unlike Christmas and New Year, hotels aren’t likely to hold any special events for Easter.
