Bridgetown
The boardwalk from Rockley takes you up the west coast to Barbados’ capital, Bridgetown, which can also be reached in 10-30 minutes’ drive from most Christ Church locations. Visit the capital of cricket at the Kensington Oval, or soak up history in the parliament buildings, Jewish synagogue and Barbados Museum.
Banks Brewery
Barbados’ iconic Banks beer is brewed in the village of Newton, and last time we checked there were three interactive tours a day to show visitors how the beer is crafted – including information on history, the machinery used and tastings at the bar. Don’t head home without leaving your mark on their signing wall where visitors have put their signatures through the years.
Harrison’s Cave
About a 30-40 minute drive into the central uplands, Harrison’s Cave is a stunning system of underground limestone caves, streams and waterfalls. There are several ways to experience it, from eco-treks through nature trails to tram journeys and simple walk in tours.
Caribbean Wax Museum
Barbados’ answer to Madame Tussauds, this wax museum in Oistins has famous Caribbean figures created from wax, including Bob Marley, Usain Bolt, former Barbadian Prime Ministers and Bajan musicians like Allison Hinds and Emilie Straker.
Gun Hill Signal Station
You’ll find Gun Hill in the neighbouring parish of Saint George, a 20 minute or so drive away. Once used for communications across the island, the signal station here gives incredible views all over Barbados, from the cruise ships docking in Bridgetown to the bright plantations stretching north and east – reach it via the path that runs through gorgeous tropical gardens.
Barbados Concorde Experience
An old BA Concorde G-BOAE is now part of the Grantley Adams Airport, where you can board the plane to see what it’s like from the inside and learn about the technology behind the legend. This makes a good place to visit before you leave the island, if you can arrive at the airport early – or for a rainy day.
