September in Antigua is all about fishing and feasting. In late September, large crowds are brought together to Nelson's Dockyard in Antigua to watch the Francis Nunes Jr. Memorial fishing tournament. The contest that honours Francis Nunes Jr, who played a crucial role in developing sport fishing to Antigua and Barbuda, has now become an anticipated event of the year. With 25 boats competing for the grand prize, it makes for very entertaining viewing. You won't go hungry as they celebrate with an absolute feast with some of the freshest seafood.
Go and witness sea turtles nesting! In September, the Environmental Awareness Group of Antigua and Barbuda run sea turtle tours on multiple beaches. Qualified volunteers lead these tours from the conservation group. These educational tours are eye-opening to how vital sea turtles are to our ecosystem and some of the shocking statistics that have left these beautiful creatures endangered. You will have the chance of witnessing any of the three species found on the island; Hawksbill, Green, and Leatherback on the shores, laying their eggs.
Some of our favourite things to do in Antigua & Barbuda are climbing Mt. Obama to see the spectacular views across the island, snorkelling in the crystal-clear water (we love Stingray City), and kayaking through the mangroves and rum tasting.
In September, Antigua & Barbuda has an average temperature of 28°C, with highs of 31°C and lows of 25°C. The chance of rain is quite high with an average of 12 days of rain in the month. Most days will be hot and sunny but as September is the peak of hurricane season, you’ll find more frequent downpours. Don’t travel to Antigua & Barbuda in September if you wish to avoid the rain.
