August's most popular event, The Antigua Carnival, sees people swarm to the island to enjoy the celebrations. This 13-day carnival is an explosion of artistic talent, Caribbean culture, Steelband music, and colourful masquerades. The event celebrates the abolishment of slavery, dating back to the 1st of August 1834, when slaves celebrated their freedom with singing and dance- the birth of this tradition. This festival is the longest-running carnival in the Caribbean, a 60 years old tradition claimed 'the Caribbean's greatest summer festival.' Expect many music performances, parades, beauty pageants, and much more.
